According to a recent report by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the world is on a dangerous path towards a 3-degree temperature rise this century due to global warming and record-breaking greenhouse gas emissions. This alarming trend has severe implications for both humanity and the planet's ecosystems.
Inger Andersen, the UNEP executive director, emphasizes the urgency, stating, "There is no person or economy left on the planet untouched by climate change, so we need to stop setting unwanted records on greenhouse gas emissions, global temperature highs and extreme weather."
UN Secretary-General António Guterres warns, "Present trends are racing our planet down a dead-end three-degree temperature rise... the emissions gap is more like an emissions canyon. A canyon littered with broken promises, broken lives and broken records."
Eamon Ryan, the Irish Minister for Climate, acknowledges the pressing reality of climate change, stating, "The report is stark and alarming... Yet, it seems that most of us, particularly in the most developed countries, continue to go about our lives as if we are collectively hard-wired to ignore the pressing reality of climate change."
Mr. Ryan emphasizes the need for a transition to a low-carbon future, stating, "We have to speed up and scale up our switch to an economy-wide, low-carbon future based on green energy, green jobs, and green agriculture."
